Aging Skin Treatment
The doctor’s medical bag for aging skin continues to change and evolve. The skin’s aging process happens through:
- Extrinsic aging; outside influences on the skin’s health and are factors that we have some control over. Examples of extrinsic aging of the skin are sun damage and smoking. Scientists believe that 85% of aging is due to these factors.
- Intrinsic aging: inside factors that are due to time and years, gravity and hormone changes. Genes play a part on how good some people age but it happens to everyone.
For patients with early skin change and normal aging, nonsurgical treatment options are very effective, such as tretinoin, vitamin C, and alpha hydroxy acids. For more advanced effects of aging in skin, chemical peels, dermabrasion, and laserabrasion are worthy options, which may be employed alone or in combination with other surgical procedures to treat the accumulated effects of sun and age. These deeper facial lines can be treated with botulinum toxin or soft tissue enhancements, such as collagen, autologous fat, or Goretex implants. For patients with sagging or excess skin, due to lose of collagen or weight loss, these patients may be good candidates for surgical procedures such as face lifts, brow lifts, or blepharoplasty (surgical reconstruction of the eyelid).
A skin care plan for each decade of life is critical, of the 20′s, 30′s, 40′s, 50′ s, and 60′s. How we treat aging skin is dependent upon what is the goal and what state the skin is currently in. A private consultation is important to define and educate or clients on choices. Aging does not take a break and neither should you on keeping up with your skin’s health. There are many treatments available now that can actually create cellular change and revitalize the aging cells. The most popular treatment options:
Chemical Peels: Chemical peels are slight acids, removing the upper surface of the skin to expose cleaner, smoother skin. When the upper layers of the skin are removed, a new, fresher layer emerges. Chemical peels are very effective at diminishing fine wrinkles, and smoothing the skin. Chemical peels are often used around the eyes and mouth, where skin tissue is delicate and can not be improved with a facelift. Depending upon the client’s age, skin condition, and accumulated skin damage, a superficial, medium, or deep chemical peel may be used to peel away the appropriate layers of skin.
Laser Skin Resurfacing: With fractional skin rejuvenation, the laser beam, an erbium laser beam, is broken up or fractionated into many small micro beams which are separated so that when they strike the skin surface small areas of the skin between the beams are not hit by the laser and left intact. The small areas treated by the fractional micro beams, called micro treatment zones, cause sufficient laser intervention to promote new collagen production to replace collagen damaged by aging and sun exposure. Damage to collagen in the skin is a cause of skin wrinkles. The new collagen produced by the laser action “plumps” skin wrinkles. The intact skin between the micro treatment zones allows for much more rapid healing-3-4 days as opposed to 2-3 weeks for the older CO2, and enough pigment cells are left intact that hypo pigmentation does not occur.
