What causes acne?
A soup of different factors, including hormones, bacterial, inflammatory disturbance, and the level of skin oil. These factors combine to four major causes: overactive oil glands, blockage of the skin pores, activity of normal skin bacteria, and inflammation
I frequently wash my face, but I still have acne – why?
By itself, washing does not prevent acne or clear the skin. Washing does remove excess oil on the surface of the skin, and slough dead skin cells. People who use facial cleansers, including alcohol based, scrubbing actively, only serve to irritate their skin, and actually make their acne worse. For best results, wash the skin twice a day gently, while a mild soap, just keep in mind that acne is actually caused by a variety of biological factors, beyond the control of washing alone.
Can stress cause acne?
While stress is commonly accused, stress, by itself, does not cause acne. Stress can have many physiologic effects on the body, which can lead to changes in hormones that may contribute to acne. In some cases the stress may actually be caused by the acne lesions, and not the other way around. As long as the acne is being treated effectively, stress should not have a significant impact.
I never had acne as a teenager, so why do I have it as an adult?
By the usual timeline, acne starts at puberty and is gone by the early 20s. In adulthood, hormones change, disposing the sebaceous glands to develop acne. Some women develop acne during pregnancy, and other women notice acne when they discontinue birth control pills. Likewise, some cosmetics can also make women more acne prone.
Could my diet contribute to acne?
Diet and food is not responsible for acne; that is, diet alone will not clear your skin. For some people, certain food can aggravate acne, such as chocolate, peanuts, pizza, shellfish, and some fatty foods. For the sake of overall health, eat a balance diet, and avoid foods that seem to contribute to acne flare ups.
Does the sun help clear acne?
No, it does not. Furthermore, the ultraviolet light increase the risk of skin cancer, and contributes to early aging. Given this, sunlight is not a recommended technique to reduce acne, especially since there are better, proven treatments. Moreover, many acne treatments increase the skin’s sensitivity to ultraviolet light, making the risk of ultraviolet light exposure all the worse.
What is the best way to treat acne?

In some cases of mild acne scarring, chemical peels may be used in some patients, while microdermabrasion or laser abrasion may benefit others. It is important that the acne be well controlled before any procedure is used to alleviate scarring.
How many treatments will I need?
