Permanent Makeup Lip FAQ
Q) How much does it cost?
A) Of course, cost depends upon the current state of your lips and your goals, but do expect to pay several hundred dollars. The savings are estimated at $400 in cosmetics and 380 hours per year. However, clients don’t get permanent makeup to save money, but for the convenience of looking their best. When compared to other procedures, such as Botox which last months, permanent makeup last years and saves time every day.
Q) How long does it take?
A) Each procedure takes 60-90 minutes, and usually one procedure is needed, sometimes two.
Q) Is this the same as a tattoo?
A) Permanent makeup is a form of tattooing, using different techniques and pigments. Anytime a color is implanted into the skin, it is technically a tattoo.
Q) Then what is micropigmentation?
A) Micropigmentation is a process to implant the color of permanent makeup into the dermis of the skin.
Q) Are there health concerns?
A) Cold sores can be activated by the lip procedure. Just as sun or dental work can set off a cold cane, so too can cosmetic work along the lip. For clients with this form of herpes, they should contact their doctor beforehand for anti-viral medication.
Q) Does the procedure hurt?
A) Pain is relative for each individual. Most patients are able to withstand the sensations, experiencing a very minor level of discomfort. For more sensitive clients, a topical anesthetic can be used to numb the treated area.
Q) How will I look after the procedure?
A) For the first days afterward, there will be minor swelling in the lips, which can be reduced with ice packs. The lips are unique in how they heal, since the lip tissue does not have a true dermal layer like body skin. After the procedure, the lips will be dark, which will return to its color after 3-5 days.
Q) Can I just line the lips, and leave the lips natural?
A) We don’t recommend this, for stylistic reasons. We recommend selecting a lip liner to the desired tone, and then selecting a lip color to blend, so it becomes part of the natural lip. It avoids the look of a lip liner, and provides definition, fullness, and color.
Q) What is I want to wear lipstick? Can I change my lip color?
A) Certainly! Since the lip color is implanted within the lip tissue, any cosmetic can be applied on top of the lips.
Q) What if I had lip filler injections? Can I still get permanent lip color?
A) Yes, but be sure to let your aethetitian know beforehand. The filler and color are occupying the same lip tissue; color selection should be adjusted to preserve long term results. If possible, the color should be implanted first, which ensures placement and symmetry of the lips.
Q) I’m also planning on facial rejuvenation treatments. Can I do this after permanent makeup for my lips?
A) Yes, you can still have laser treatments such as IPL and fraxel type lasers for skin restoration. Be sure to inform your aethetitian of your upcoming plans.
Q) I heard some internet rumor that you can’t have an MRI if you have permanent makeup. Is this true?
A) No, it is not; you can safely go through an MRI if you have permanent makeup.
