Pre-and-Post Patient Treatment Guidelines
A patient’s pre-and-post treatment care can impact minor side effects and filler results. One of the biggest tips is to set client expectations that temporary bruises, red spots, tenderness, itching, discoloration, or bumps can occur, even under the application of the most experienced injectors. These effects can last up to one-to-two weeks after treatment, depending upon the patient’s individual healing characteristics. As always, client communication is key. Be realistic with the results the patient can realistically expect.
Pre Treatment
- Reduce blood thinners. When medically approved, reduce use of medicines and herbs that thin the blood, which can increase bruising. Advice patients to replace with Tylenol. Common blood thinners include:
- Aspirin and Exedrin
- Ibuprofen, such as Motrin, Aleve, and Advil
- St John’s Wart
- Vitamin E
- Omega Three fatty acids
- Ginko Bilboa
- Ginseng
- Garlic
- No alcohol 48 hours prior to treatment.
- Encourage pineapple consumption in natural form, either as fruit or juice. When the same essence is concentrated as Bromelain supplements, other side effects are possible.
- Encourage Arnica Montana the morning of treatment (available at Whole Foods) if the patient does not have high blood pressure or heart issues.
- If the patient has experienced cold sores, consider application of Valtrex or other anti-viral medications, to help prevent possible outbreaks.
During Treatment
- If the patient is sensitive, apply an anesthetic topical numbing cream 20-30 minutes prior to treatment.
- Apply an ice bag to the treatment sight after treatment.
- If spot bleeding happens, apply immediate pressure and ice the spot.
Post Treatment
- Console time. After treatment, it can take 2-7 days for filler effects to become full and minor bruising to settle.
- No alcohol 24 hours after treatment.
- Light exercise for 48 hours after treatment, such as walking. The heart rate should not exceed 100 beats-per-minute for more than a few minutes.
- Do not engage in hot yoga, or inverted yoga positions.
- Avoid excessive sun and heat until swelling and redness is gone.
- No aspirin, Exedrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve or Advil for 48 hours after treatment, though Tylenol is always fine.
- The patient should avoid squeezing the massaging the treated area for four hours after treatment.
- If the patient experiences extended swelling, apply a cold compress for ten minutes each hours.
- Encourage proper use of sunscreen, one with both UVA and UVB protection with at least SPF 30.
- If practicable, the patient should wear a hat when going outside.
- If the treatment triggers a patient’s acne, apply a drug store acne medication.
